I have chosen to keep holding on to a down-in-the-dumps attitude this summer.

I’ve tried hard to reset to gratitude and perspective. But, mostly I have failed. A serious issue has happened with one of my horses which has put the brakes on my plans and several of my friends’ plans for the summer. The situation comes with constant worry, no exact solution, and vet bills. My puppy, Miguel, is playing so hard and having such an incredible time with walks and romps with other dogs that he has a limp which isn’t healing. Now there are X-rays and CT scans for my dog too, along with phone calls, texts, and emails to vets and pharmacies. My selfish little pity pot overflows.

Of course, I know so that many others in the world have really dire problems. Starvation. Wildfires. Abuse. War. Illness. The disaster in Nepal dominating the news today is just one calamity out of hundreds.

Reading Mary Oliver poems often helps me to refocus on small gifts – especially those from nature. Usually, that is easy to do in summer. Sunflowers planted rather carelessly in front of my porch are now 8 feet high and haven’t even bloomed yet. What a marvel! And, sometimes I can actually slow down to sit outside and stare at formations of clouds, especially right before the refreshing, if brief, thunderstorms appear. Even if just for 15 minutes, it does help. Or, witnessing the kindness of strangers, like last week when I watched as several men jumped out of their cars at a busy intersection to help push a stalled car out of the way. Inspiring!

I can’t say that I’m consistently able to keep positive, grateful thoughts right now, but I’m trying! Sometimes that’s the best we can do, eh?

Terrier mix, 18 mos, female

Now in foster care, this beautiful girl has blossomed from a frightened former stray into a playful, snuggly little love bug. Although she is still scared of strangers, she now loves sleeping on the bed, playing with her foster brother, and soaking up all the love she can get. Tiffany can be a little skittish at times as she continues learning how to be a beloved family pet and walks are still a new experience for her, so she'll need a patient family willing to take things slowly and give her time to build trust. This special girl has come a long way and she is going to be the light of her forever family's life!
