I go to a lot of movies. Alone or with friends. In a quiet, dark, comfy theater, with a bag of popcorn. Yep!
Recently, I was in line to buy snacks and the young woman who is there every week taking our orders asked, "What movie are you seeing, Love?" I replied, "The Odyssey," making a snap judgement (oh, shame!) that since she was young and working as a movie theater attendant she wouldn't know much about the origin of the movie. Keep in mind that I barely knew much about the ancient Greek epic poem, or much about its meaning, myself. To my total surprise, she proceeded to tell me how the movie was
pretty true to the book but with some differences, and how much she loved the book "Ithaca" about Odysseus' wife Penelope. I was stunned and humbled. How quick I was to assign attributes to her that were totally wrong. That's happened to me time and again. Someone surprises me with brilliance or depth when I had low expectations.
Of course, I have NO IDEA what people are actually like underneath their exterior appearances. Remaining open and humble is something I strive for and often fail to do. But, it's a worthy goal.
I enjoyed the movie and the popcorn and the friends who attended with me. Summer is rushing by with all sorts of activities…in spite of the crazy heat we are experiencing this year.
I hope you are enjoying this last part of summer and opening yourself to new experiences with humility and joy!
