November 2025

Thirty years ago this month, we opened the doors to TallGrass.
I'm stunned at how quickly time has passed. It all started as a dream. My friend Nancy Bible and I wanted to leave our stressful, dog-eat-dog corporate careers in Chicago and change our lives to kinder, gentler purposes. Money and power ceased to interest us.
We began the spa with five employees and both of us lived in the middle of the spa which was incredibly challenging. Open 7 days a week almost from the start, we never had a chance to get away even for a minute. Partly because of this, after a couple of years, Nancy and I parted ways and I was on my own.
Because of this anniversary, I dug up my old journals from that time and, after reading them again, oh my goodness! It was such challenging and complicated work. Day after day I'd write, "Please God help me with all of this! I'm overwhelmed!" Back in 1995, there were just a handful of day spas in the country. There were no consultants, no magazines, no web searches, no information on how to structure a spa. Add to that, I moved to Evergreen after my mother had just passed away (heartbroken).
I had no friends to lean on here AND the spa continued to lose money for the first four years. I had no idea what I was doing and made lots of mistakes. But, I clung to the belief that if TallGrass operated with integrity and if I worked hard and listened to the universe's nudges, we would prevail.
And we did. These past 30 years have been rewarding and wonderful. I've changed dramatically both personally and professionally and have learned to choose my reactions and come from gratitude first. The women (and a few men) who have worked with me at TallGrass have taught me so much and have given their all to help make this place magical. Add yourselves, fabulous guests, for believing in us and providing so much friendship and support. And the Evergreen community has been incredible, too. I
will never ever leave this beautiful little town.
One of the key things I learned from everyone around me was the importance of giving back. I have been graced with such an easy, healthy, happy life (mixed with the normal heartaches, of course) that I know it is my responsibility and my JOY to share with others. The philanthropic work that we've done as a company is a major source of the pride I feel.
On November 7, our actual anniversary date, we will meet at Wild Game in Evergreen to pack 500 (hopefully) backpacks to donate to the Bill Daniels Center for Homeless Veterans. We've done this for the past five years and it's been supported by everyone in the community. There is still time to donate items. And please feel free to join us on November 6 at 5:30 pm to sort stuff into bins and/or on November 7 at 8:30 am to pack. Each event takes a little over an hour and it's super fun!

Also, I'm inviting you to our 30th Anniversary Celebration on November 13 from 5:00 to 6:30 pm. That's also the day of our annual Holiday Sale (one day only) when we offer 10% off all gift certificate purchases and 15% off all retail in the spa. Come to shop during the day or shop and party in the evening. Refreshments will be served.
I'll say a couple of words of gratitude at 6:00 and we're preparing a loop slide show of our past. (I was so young then! Ha!) We're asking for a voluntary donation of $30 to be split between two worthy animal-related non-profits in our community – Evergreen Animal Protective League (rescue for dogs and cats) and Wild Aware (keeping our wild animals safe). Click to RSVP for the party.
I hope to see you at the spa or hear from you so that I may thank you personally for all you have done for me and for TallGrass. If I'm not able to thank you in person, please accept my profound gratitude for these past 30 years. My cup runneth over!
